The Daily Blade: Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson

#56 - Joby Martin // The Good Shepherd vs. The Thief

Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson Season 1 Episode 56

Jesus contrasts the thief who steals, kills and destroys with Himself as the Good Shepherd who offers abundant life and lays down His life for His sheep.

• Money lies to us by promising satisfaction and security it cannot deliver
• The "abundant life" is not about accumulating possessions but about relationship with Christ
• Worldly security disappears with one phone call from a doctor or highway patrolman
• Jesus fulfills our deepest desires in ways material things never can
• The lust of the eyes (wanting stuff) is fulfilled through our eternal inheritance as co-heirs with Christ
• The lust of the flesh (wanting to feel good) is fulfilled through Christ's peace that transcends understanding
• The pride of life (wanting significance) is fulfilled as we are seated with Christ at God's right hand
• True abundance is found in Christ, not in possessions we'll eventually leave behind

Speaker 2:

All right, welcome back to day three of John, chapter 10. We're going to read the same verses, but we're going to look at the other side of it John 10.10,. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father and I lay down my life for the sheep. Let me ask you a question.

Speaker 2:

Jesus says that he came that you may have life and have it abundantly. Are you living the abundant life that Christ has for you, or is your life defined by a relentless pursuit of the accumulation of an abundance of stuff? I mean, I hope you've realized at this point I hope you're old enough, I hope you're mature enough that the stuff of this world is just never going to satisfy you. And that's the trick that he says that that the hireling, when danger comes, is going to leave you high and dry. You see, I don't know if you realize this, but your money lies to you in the month and the lie that your money tells you is this If you love me, I'll love you back. If you love me, I'll love you back. If you love me, then I will bring you satisfaction and security. And the reality is that your money can neither satisfy you nor bring you security. I mean, how many VH1 behind the music do you have to watch before you realize that the stuff of this earth is not what we were made for. We were made for more, that the abundant life is not an abundance of stuff. The more that the abundant life is not an abundance of stuff. The abundant life is found in our relationship with Christ. Jesus says that he is the good shepherd and he lays down his life for the sheep. What else will lay down its life for you? You see, the other lie that money tells us is that it will keep us secure. Sometimes you log onto a bank account and you're looking for a particular number and if it's over that number, you feel a sense of safety and security. And I'm just telling you, there's nothing wrong with saving and there's nothing wrong with Planning for tomorrow for sure. But if you put your security in the things of this world, it will let you down. You get one phone call from the doctor and all of that security is gone. You get one phone call from the highway patrolman and somebody you love has been in a wreck, and what did that money do to secure? You See, the abundant life is found only in Jesus Christ. He's the only one that will ever satisfy.

Speaker 2:

Yesterday we talked about the reality that the enemy throws at us three things. There are three desires in us that he tempts us with the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. The reality is that Jesus is the fulfillment for what you want in the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. The lust of the eyes is the desire to have. Well, I don't know if you realize this, but if you are in Jesus Christ, then the Bible says that you are a co-heir with Christ and all that he has is yours. If you want some stuff, I've got good news.

Speaker 2:

Follow after Jesus and one day the stuff of heaven is things like mansions and full tables of food, banqueting tables, and they've got so much gold in heaven that they use it as asphalt. You'll be walking on streets of gold. If you want some stuff, you have an inheritance in heaven waiting for you, where moth or rust cannot destroy, and it is stored up for you. The lust of the eyes is to want stuff, and God has an inheritance for you. The lust of the flesh is the desire to feel Well. There's no bottle or pill that can give you what Christ has for you.

Speaker 2:

Jesus says come to me, all you who are weary and heavy burdened, and he says and I will give you rest for your soul.

Speaker 2:

You see, peace is not found in a set of circumstances. Peace is found in Jesus Christ, and Paul tells us in Philippians that we are to be anxious for nothing. But by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, we can make all our requests known to God, and the peace of God that transcends understanding will guard our heart and mind in Christ Jesus. There's not a vacation on the world that could provide that kind of peaceful, easy feeling. Or maybe your pursuit is the pride of life to make much of you. Well, I've got really good news that if you are in Christ Jesus, then he will exalt you with him as a co-heir, and the Bible says that you and I are seated with Christ at the right hand of God, the Father. So the thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus has come that you may have life and have it abundantly. And the abundant life that he's talking about is not the abundance of stuff that you're going to leave behind anyway. The abundant life is Christ, because he is more than enough.
