The Daily Blade: Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson
#61 - Kyle Thompson // A Godly Man Strives for Holiness
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We're diving into the third element of a godly man, examining why and how men should strive for holiness as described by the Apostle Peter, who calls us to be set apart in all our conduct.
• Godly men surrender to Christ, live selflessly, and strive for holiness
• Men naturally strive for career success, fitness goals, and achievements, but often neglect holiness
• Holiness means being "set apart" and "consecrated" to God
• Many people declare devotion to God with their mouths while their actions demonstrate otherwise
• True struggling produces results – if you were genuinely struggling against sin, you would see progress
• Holiness is not about earning salvation but is evidence of genuine faith in Christ
• Striving for holiness requires daily commitment and intentional choices

Introduction to The Daily Blade
Speaker 1Welcome to the Daily Blade . The Word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit , the primary spiritual weapon in the Christian's armor against the forces of evil . Your hosts are Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson , and they stand ready to equip men for the fight . Let's sharpen up .
The Ten Elements of a Godly Man
Speaker 2All right , guys , over the next two weeks we're going over the ten elements of a godly man , and this is as we see in Scripture . So so , so far we've talked about a godly man has surrendered his life to Christ , and a godly man is selfless . Today we're talking about element three , and element three of a godly man is a godly man strives for
What Men Actually Strive For
Speaker 2holiness . Now , as men , we strive for a lot of stuff , right . We strive for more money . We want , you know , career and business success . We want prestige . We want notoriety , we want fame how about this ? We want higher one rep maxes , right . We want more jujitsu trophies . We want faster miles . We want the best spring break bod right . We want back-to-back fantasy football championships . We don't level up in some you know random video game . We strive for stuff , right . Well , what about holiness ? I mean , I'll just say for a lot
Peter's Call to Holiness
Speaker 2of people , and even for me , at times , it's kind of an afterthought , right . We don't really focus on holiness . But my job today is to bring that idea , the idea of striving for holiness , to the front of your brain , and I'm going to use the apostle Peter to help me do that . Now , I love me some , peter , and here's the reason why I love me some Peter , because he's kind of dumb . Right , and I'm kind of dumb Like Peter is long on words but not long on thinking , and you can see this throughout his ministry . So I'm like , hey , if there's hope for Peter and if he can be the rock on which Jesus was going to build his church , maybe he could do something with a dumber like me . But here's the thing about Peter Peter is going to be calling us to be holy . Okay , it's not going to be a polite suggestion , so let's go to the words of Peter in 1 Peter 1 , verses 13 through 20 .
Speaker 2Therefore , preparing your minds for action and being sober minded , set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ . As obedient children , do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance . But as he who called you is holy , you also be holy in all your conduct . Since it is written , you shall be holy , for I am holy and if you can call on him as father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds , conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile , knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers , not with perishable things such as silver or gold , but with the precious blood of Christ , like that of a lamb , without blemish or spot . He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times . For the sake of you who , through him , are believers in God , who raised him from the dead and gave him glory , so that your faith .
Speaker 2And so we need to do a little bit of a quick word study here , because some people think they know what holy means , but they don't really know
Understanding True Struggle vs. Excuses
Speaker 2what it means . So the word holy I guess the easiest way to think about it is to be set apart . Okay , so here's where everything is and all the muck and mire and darkness and sinfulness , and we're going to be set apart , we're going to be separated from that . And also it can mean consecrated . So consecrated is just a fancy word for a declared devotion to God , like a public declaration , okay . But here's our main problem we will declare with our mouths a devotion to God , but our actions are the opposite of holy right and for most people , as opposed to fixing our actions , we just make excuses for them . Oh well , this is how I'm wired , or this is how things were meant to be , or hey , you know , it's just genetic predisposition and hey , this is just how we act in my family and different things like that . We just like to make excuses as to why we're not upholding a certain standard in our lives . But here's the thing Recently we have a program out on Daunted Life called Dominion . This is like a personal coaching program that I do , and so we've got a wait list . So if you guys want to go to our website , you can sign up for it , all the stuff right .
Speaker 2But during the interviews for people that I was looking to bring into my program , I kept hearing the same thing . I would hear guys say man , I really struggle , I really struggle with being in shape , I really struggle with getting over porn and masturbation , I really struggle with this , I really struggle with that . And then finally , after a few you know rough interviews in a row , I kind of just snapped at a guy , nicely , nicely snapped at a guy , you know , paul , to Peter's face , kind of snapping and I was like , dude , if you had been struggling to be in shape , you would actually be in shape , because you know what it takes to be in shape Struggling , because being in shape is not easy Waking up early and going to your garage gym or driving to the gym or hitting the pavement or something like that . That's not easy . But if you were striving for being in shape , if you were actually struggling , you would have arrived by now . Again , let's go back to verse 15 .
Speaker 2But as he who called you as holy , you also be holy in all of your conduct . You know what that takes , striving , I mean , it takes struggle , but you have to do that if you want to cover all those areas that God is telling us that we need
Faith Transfer and Daily Striving
Speaker 2to cover . But here's the thing I don't want you guys hearing what I'm not saying , which is that our works can somehow save us . Right , our works can't save us . I don't need to do a deep theological dive and prove that to you guys , but good works right , and a holiness being set apart is evidence of us pistooing in Jesus's payment of our sin debt . Guys , if you follow Joby for any length of time or listen to his sermons which , if you're not , you should one of the best preachers in America on any given weekend .
Speaker 2But he talked about this word pistoo , which means you're transferring your faith into something right . I can look at a chair and have faith that that's a chair . But until I transfer my weight and my trust onto that chair to uphold me , I've not put my faith in that chair . If you pashduo in Jesus and the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross , you are transferring your faith into that reality . But , guys , it's going to be really , really hard to do that if we're not striving for holiness . Again , element one you got to be a Christian to even be dealing with any of this type of stuff . But day in and day out in our daily lives , we have to strive for holiness and that is element three of a godly man . A godly man strives for holiness
