The Daily Blade: Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson
#88 - Joby Martin // The Deeper Meaning of Cana
The Gospel of John records Jesus' first miracle at a wedding in Cana not simply as a display of power, but as a sign pointing to his redemptive purpose of transforming lives completely.
• Jesus turned ordinary water for Jewish purification into extraordinary wine
• This miracle is called a "sign" because it points to something greater than itself
• The dirty water represents our lives before Christ
• Jesus doesn't just clean the outside (like religion attempts) but transforms us completely
• We move from being spiritually dead, blind, and lost to becoming children of God who can see and walk
• Christ takes what is broken and presents us as something beautiful to the Father
• True transformation comes only through Jesus, not through religious effort

Speaker 2:All right, welcome to day five of John, chapter two. We're going to read a big portion of the text again and then point to the entire point of this miracle, john 2, one and following On. The third day there was a wedding at Cana, in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples, and when the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him they have no wine. And Jesus said to her woman what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come. And his mother said to the servants do whatever he tells you Now. There were six stone water jars that were there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding 20 or 30 gallons, and Jesus said to the servants fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim and he said to them now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast. And so they took it, and when the master of the feast tasted, the water now become wine and did not know where it came from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. The master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor one. But you have kept the good wine until now. This, the first of his signs, jesus did at Cana, in Galilee, and manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him. You see, it's interesting In the gospel of John, when Jesus does miracles, it's called a sign.
Speaker 2:And the reason it's called a sign is because a sign always points to something greater than himself. And so what it's called a sign is because a sign always points to something greater than himself. And so what Jesus is doing is he's not just doing random miracles, he's not just flexing his raw power, but he's revealing his redemptive purpose. You hear that. Don't miss that. That miracles of Jesus in the Bible are not just Jesus flexing his raw power, yet Jesus is revealing or pointing to his redemptive purpose. So why do this miracle? Was it only because hospitality is such a big deal and he's trying to take care of this guy? No, that's not it. This is a sign.
Speaker 2:So what does this miracle point to? Here's the point of this miracle that you and I are the dirty hand-washed water that's in the jar, and that Jesus, and Jesus alone, takes what is dirty and nasty and transforms it into something beautiful and valuable. That's what Jesus does for us. You see, what did not happen is Jesus does not tell the servants you see those jars over there. Why don't you go get some Clorox wipes? And I want you to wipe them down from the outside.
Speaker 2:And what we're going to do is we're going to change what's on the inside by whitewashing the outside. That won't work. That's what religion tries to do. Religion is nothing but trying to appease God by an effort at a higher moral standard and moral activity. But if you clean the outside of the jars, that does not change what is on the inside. That what he is pointing to is God's redemptive purpose is he wants to transform us from something gross to something beautiful, from something that was dead to something that was alive, and that requires a miracle, and cleaning up the outside will never do it.
Speaker 2:What we have to do is put our lives into the hands of Jesus, and when we do that, he doesn't just filter out the bad things from your life and go from dirty water to clean water. That's not what he does. He completely transforms us from something that we were not into something that we are. We were orphans, we were lost, we were blind, we were dead.
Speaker 2:And when Christ enters our life, we become sons of the most high God. We are able to see we are not lame anymore, we can walk. We are not blind, we can see. We are not lame anymore, we can walk. We are not blind, we can see. We are made new, that we are brought from spiritual death to spiritual life, because that's just what Jesus does. And then Jesus presents us to his heavenly father and says here, here, I took what was old and dead and corrupted by sin, and not only have I purified it, I've completely changed it to something that is pleasing to you. That's what this miracle is about that through the blood of Jesus Christ, he took a bunch of old, dirty, washed-up, good-for-nothing folks like me and you, and he has transformed us into something beautiful before the king, his very own sons. This is the point of John, chapter two. I hope you know that, I hope you believe that and I hope you will live like that is true in your life.
