The Daily Blade: Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson

#161 - Derwin Gray// Grace Changes Your Mind and Rewires Your Identity

Season 1 Episode 161

Grace possesses the power to transform doubters into devoted followers, as demonstrated through the journey of James, Jesus's half-brother, who moved from skepticism to martyrdom.

• Grace breaks through doubt, remaining patient with disbelief even when familiarity blinds us to divine reality
• Jesus appeared to James after the resurrection, demonstrating that grace doesn't condemn but rather reveals itself when we're ready
• Grace completely rewired James's identity, transforming him from skeptic to church leader who identified as a servant rather than a brother
• James's commitment was so complete that he ultimately faced martyrdom, being pushed from the temple and clubbed to death rather than renouncing his faith
• The transformation of James proves that grace isn't merely a second chance but a complete restart that changes our mind, heart, and purpose

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Daily Blade. The Word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit, the primary spiritual weapon in the Christian's armor against the forces of evil. Your hosts are Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson, and they stand ready to equip men for the fight. Let's sharpen up.

Speaker 2:

Grace changes your mind. Grace has the ability to change your mind. Take, for example, the story of James, the half-brother of Jesus. So watch this. Number one grace breaks through doubt. Grace breaks through doubt. There's this scene in John, chapter 7, where his own family, his own brothers, did not believe in him. Can you imagine how hard it must have been for your own family not to believe that you were the Messiah? John 7, 5 says this. For even his own brothers did not believe in him. Remember this grace is patient with your disbelief. James grew up with Jesus, but he couldn't see him for who he was. Often familiarity can blind us to the divine, but grace doesn't cancel doubters. It keeps pursuing them.

Speaker 2:

Number two grace meets you in resurrection power. In 1 Corinthians 15, 7, after Jesus rose from the dead, defeating the dark powers, crucifying sin and death, and in victory. 1 Corinthians 15, 7 says this. Then he appeared to James. Can you imagine that moment when your half-brother, who did not believe in you, brother, who did not believe in you, who saw you flogged and whipped, who saw you crucified on a cross, sees you raised from the dead? You see, grace shows up when your mind is ready to change. Jesus didn't scold James. He appeared to him after the resurrection. One encounter with the risen Jesus changes everything. Grace doesn't say I told you so. Grace says I'm here. Number three grace rewires your identity.

Speaker 2:

James 1.1 says this James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace makes you a servant, not a skeptic. James went from mocking Jesus to leading the church in Jerusalem. He didn't call himself Jesus's brother, he called himself servant. When grace changes your mind, it changes your name and your mission. As history tells us from extra biblical sources, james was on top of the temple and religious leaders were persecuting him, saying Jesus is not the Messiah. Denounce your faith. And he wouldn't. And so he was pushed off the temple mount, fell to the ground and still was not dead, and so he was actually clubbed to death in that moment. Man, how do you go from denying Jesus to being pushed off the temple and clubbed to death for the one you denied? What happens is grace. Jesus didn't give up on James and he won't give up on you. Grace is not just a second chance, it's a whole new start. When grace changes your mind, it transforms your heart and unleashes a new purpose. This is Pastor Derwin Gray Marinate on that.
