All right, welcome back Day four of this week, this deep dive on the Ten Commandments. The reason I'm clumping these together is I want you to get the meta-narrative Instead of doing a deep dive on each one. Maybe I'll do that eventually one day. I want you to see kind of the whole picture here. So again, the commandments are a grace gift of God that God didn't wait until the Israelites got them all right before he rescued them out of slavery. By his grace he rescued them out of slavery. And then he gives the commandments as a gift to his people so that they would know how to do two things how to love God and love each other. And so, really, commandments five, six, seven, eight, nine and 10 are how we ought to rightly live with one another. But we will not be able to rightly live in love with one another if we don't first see God for who he really is and we know how to rightly love him, because he loves us first. And so, beginning with commandment number five, beginning of verse 12, says this honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord, your God, is giving you. Commandment six you shall not murder. Commandment seven you shall not commit adultery. Commandment eight you shall not steal. Commandment nine you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. And commandment 10, you shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant, or his ox or his donkey or anything that is your neighbors. You see, god is saying the way you need to treat people. Jesus is going to come and say this man, the golden rule is this just treat people how you wish they would treat you and this is how we wish people would treat us. And the reason that we treat people this way is because this is how God has treated us. The platinum rule that Jesus gives is actually treat people the way I have treated you. So honor your mom and dad. Have you done that lately? And, by the way, you don't graduate from this one. This doesn't just mean that you honor your mom and dad where you're a little kid living in their house, but as long as they're your mom and dad, then you are to honor them. And one of the greatest ways that you can honor your mom and dad is simply this say thank you. If you hadn't called them in a while, call them right now and when they say, hey, hadn't heard from you, what's up? Just say thank you. Another way that you can honor your mom and dad maybe you didn't have the greatest relationship is to forgive them. Why? Because in Christ, god has forgiven us the next one.

Thou shalt not murder. This means that we honor life and in fact Jesus says you have heard that it was said thou shalt not murder. But I say to you that even if you have anger against your brother in your heart, that you have already committed murder. You see, we are to honor life because every single person that we come in contact with is an image bearer of God and they have intrinsic value simply because God decided to make them and we are to honor that. He goes on to say that we should honor marriages, that you shall not commit adultery, that sex, according to God, is a gift. It's not gross and it's not a God itself to be worshiped, but it is a gift. But it is a gift for married people and, according to the Bible, marriage is between one man and one woman for one lifetime. Now, can you imagine this? Some people will be like oh, does this still count, even today? Can you imagine an entire world. If we only followed this one commandment Divorce gone, abortion gone, domestic violence gone. It changes everything. Why? Because the law is a gift to us that we know how to live in God's world, god's way.

The next commandment thou shalt not lie, says to honor truth.

You see, lying is a cancer to relationships, because relationships are built on trust.

And then, finally, a part of the way we honor one another is to honor God's blessing in other people's life. Anytime you covet somebody else, when you look at what somebody else has and you covet here's the problem. It's an affront against the almighty God. What you're saying is God, you got it wrong. You gave him too much and me not enough.

But when we are able to celebrate where God blesses, then what we were saying is God, you still got the whole world in your hands. So you decided to give my brother-in-law a raise. God bless you. I trust you in blessing other people. So if you get the Ten Commandments right, it's not a list of rules that make you righteous before God, because none of us can pull that off. It is actually a gift to us, because God already redeemed Israel out of slavery and into the promised land, and it is both a map and a mirror. It's a map to show us how to rightly live before a perfect God, but then it's also a mirror so that we hold up to ourself and say, uh-oh, I've got a problem To hear more about that.
