The Daily Blade: Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson
#181 - Joby Martin // What's Your Boat? Recognizing God's Call to Step Into the Unknown
We explore Matthew 14, focusing on Peter's courageous decision to step out of the boat and walk on water toward Jesus.
• Peter requested to walk on water because as a Talmudim (disciple), he believed he could become like his rabbi
• In first-century Jewish culture, being a disciple meant more than learning teachings—it meant following in your rabbi's footsteps
• Jesus calling Peter to "come" was an invitation to supernatural faith and obedience
• God calls each of us to step out of our comfort zones in different ways
• Potential "boat-leaving" moments include forgiveness, reconciliation, serving your spouse, radical generosity, sharing faith, or starting ministry
• Many miracles remain unrealized because we fail to take the step of faith God is asking of us
• What appears impossible becomes possible when we respond to Jesus' invitation with obedience

Welcome to the Daily Blade. The Word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit, the primary spiritual weapon in the Christian's armor against the forces of evil. Your hosts are Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson, and they stand ready to equip men for the fight. Let's sharpen up.
Speaker 2:All right, welcome back to Matthew, chapter 14. I'm gonna pick up from the beginning again. I know it's repetitive, but trust me, we need to hear this over and over and over, beginning in verse 22,. Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountainside by himself to pray. And when evening came, he was there alone. But the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night, jesus came to them walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and they said it's a ghost. And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them saying take heart, it is, I do not be afraid.
Speaker 2:Verse 28. And Peter answering him Lord, if it is, you, command me to come to you on the water. And Jesus said come. So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. Now. What a miracle. Now, before you get to the part that's going to happen tomorrow, that everybody is well aware of. Before you get to that, first of all, notice this Peter got out of the boat. Peter walked on the water. Well, the real question here why in the world did Peter ask to come out and walk on the water? He says, lord, if it's you, command me to come out to you on the water. Well, lord, if it's you, command me to come out to you on the water. Well, here's why.
Speaker 2:Because Peter is what's called a Talmudim. In the first century, every little boy and girl would have gone to Hebrew school it was called Bet-Mirash, and they would have memorized much of the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. And if you were the best of the next level of Hebrew school and you would have studied really all of the Old Testament, and then if you were the best of the best of the best, then you would have been invited to go and study under a rabbi. And if you didn't make the cut, then you were told listen, you love the Torah, you love God, but why don't you go and learn the trade of your father? Well, if you'll remember that Jesus meets Peter working for his dad and Jesus invites Peter to follow Jesus as a Talmudim, and what it means to be a Talmudim is that you would be covered in the dust of your rabbi, that you would follow your rabbi, and you didn't just learn the things they taught, but you believed that you were going to become like the rabbi you followed. And so what Peter is saying is all right. Well, if I'm your follower and you are my leader, then I'm supposed to be able to do what you can do. So if you are who you say you are and I am your follower, then call me to follow in your footsteps. And that's what Jesus tells Peter to do Get out of the boat.
Speaker 2:So let me ask you, where is God calling you to get out of the boat, the boat. So let me ask you, where is God calling you to get out of the boat? Like what is that thing in your life that you know deep down in your soul, louder than you can hear my voice right now, that you know God is calling you to step out of the boat, to step out of the safety of your regular life, to step out of the comfortable of your regular life and step into obedience to the voice of God. Maybe it doesn't make sense, but you know the step of obedience that he's calling you to take, you know, that courageous step of faith. What is it? Maybe is to forgive that person that you have not forgiven. Maybe it's to pick up the phone and call that person and begin that really, really difficult process of reconciliation. Or, men, maybe God is calling you to actually love your wife, like Christ loved the church. Quit being lazy and quit trying to be served, and why don't you become a servant? Maybe he's calling you to be radically generous and write that check to the kingdom of God. Maybe it's to share your faith with the person that you've been praying for. You just haven't opened your mouth to talk to him about Jesus. Maybe what he's calling you to do is start that ministry.
Speaker 2:Here's the thing. You have no idea what hangs in the balance. You see, oftentimes in scriptures, the thing that would accompany the miracles of Jesus was a step of faith or activity by the person that received the miracle, like in the book of Acts when Peter says silver and gold have I? None, but what I have, I give unto you in the name of Jesus, stand up and walk. And then he reaches out his hand to the man on the sidewalk. And it was in the activity of the reaching out of the hand that the man began to walk. I just wonder, in today's time, how many miracles are still sitting on the sidewalk because men have not done what Jesus has told them to do? So let me ask you very bluntly what is Jesus telling you to do? It may be scary, it may not make sense, but you have no idea what hangs in the balance. I dare you to quit with the excuses and be faithful and step out of the boat.
