The Daily Blade: Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson

#197 - Joby Martin // Work, Will, and Woman in God's Original Plan

Season 1 Episode 197

God gave Adam three things for dominion: work to enjoy, will to obey, and a woman to love, establishing a blueprint for biblical manhood that remains relevant today.

• Genesis 2:18 presents the first "not good" in Scripture - man being alone
• God created woman as a helper (azer) equal in value but fulfilling a complementary role
• Adam named all animals, getting his world in order before receiving Eve
• Single men should practice loving relationships with mothers, sisters, and female friends
• Men need to have their lives in order before being qualified to receive "one of God's daughters"
• Marriage follows God's order: leave parents, cleave to spouse, then become one flesh
• Reversing God's design leads to shame in relationships
• Sex is like fire - beautiful in its proper context (marriage) but destructive outside it
• Men must reject the cultural tendency to commodify women for selfish purposes
• Restoration comes through confession, the blood of Jesus, and commitment to love sacrificially

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Daily Blade. The Word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit, the primary spiritual weapon in the Christian's armor against the forces of evil. Your hosts are Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson, and they stand ready to equip men for the fight. Let's sharpen up.

Speaker 2:

All right, welcome back to day four, as we talk about God's original intent for man Genesis, chapter two, beginning of verse 18,. What we're going to find is that God gave three things for Adam to have dominion over One, he gave him work to enjoy, he gave him will to obey, and then, thirdly, he gave him a woman to love. Verse 18 of chapter two. It says then the Lord God said it is not good that man should be alone. This is the first not good thing we've ever seen in the Bible. It says I will make a helper fit for him. That word helper is azer, okay, equal in value, for sure. But how many of you know that men need help?

Speaker 2:

Verse 19, it says now, out of the ground, the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them and whatever the man called every living creature that was its name. The man gave names to all the livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him, and so the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man and while he slept he took one of his ribs and he closed up its place with flesh, and the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. And then the man said this at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called woman because she was taken out of man. Therefore, man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. So what God gave to Adam was work to enjoy, a will to obey and a woman to love.

Speaker 2:

Now let me tell you, you single guys out here, then if you think well, I don't have a woman. God has given you all kinds of relationships for you to practice, so that if one day God gives you the gift of a wife, then you will have practice loving some women in your life. That starts with your mama. You respect your mama, you love your mama, you honor your mama. That starts with your actual sisters in your life, and it definitely includes your Christian sisters in your life. And so if all you've ever done is take, take, take, then maybe you are not ready to be the man that God has called you to be and you are not ready to be the husband of one of God's daughters. So what I want you to notice here is that God said it's not good for a man to be alone, and then he's going to make a helper fit for Adam. But before this, what does Adam do? Adam names all of the animals that have been created. In other words, adam gets his world in order before he is ready to receive one of God's daughters as his wife.

Speaker 2:

So let me say that, listen, if you're single out there and you're like, how come God won't send me a girl, well let me ask you, scooter, what would you do if God did send you a girl? And I know I've heard some single guys here at my church say well, I know what I would do, and they're talking about sex. Well, after that, 90 seconds of glory was up. What about the rest of your life? You see, do you have your house in order in such a way that God could trust you with one of his daughters? Like, do you have a job, do you live at home? Or have you gotten yourself in order so that you could create the kind of life that you could invite another human being into. Because if you think that woman is there just to give you what you want, then you are not qualified to be a husband. We're going to talk about this in a few weeks. But what it means to be a husband is that you would be willing to lay down your life for your wife. You lay down your wants and needs and you serve her.

Speaker 2:

And so notice at the end of our passage. What happens is therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. That means that sex is only for married people. Sex is a gift from God, but it's like a fire. Is a fire a good thing or a bad thing? In the appropriate context, it's a wonderful thing. Fire in a fireplace will warm your house and you can cook s'mores over it. It's beautiful. Fire outside of the fireplace will burn your house down. So it says, a man shall leave and the King James says and cleave, hold fast to his wife and they become one flesh.

Speaker 2:

And the man and his wife were both naked and unashamed. Let me tell you what's happened in our culture a bunch, instead of Christian men serving women instead, what you've done is you've served yourself and you've commodified women to use them to get what you want. Done is you've served yourself and you've commodified women to use them to get what you want. And you got this thing out of order, that you got naked first and then you left your family and you cleave together in marriage, and that's why there's a bunch of shame in your marriage. You see, the order matters. You leave and you cleave and no shame follows you into marriage.

Speaker 2:

So if you did get this thing out of order, men, then I would implore you. The only thing you can do about your past is be forgiven of it and learn from it. But I would highly encourage you to lead your wife to a place where you confess and say honey, I am very, very sorry. I acted like a boy instead of a man. I tried to take something that was not mine, and in the kingdom of God you don't need a second chance. You need the blood of Jesus and from now on and maybe you would be the man that says, from now on, I am going to love you like Christ loved me. So God gave every man a will to obey, work to enjoy and a woman to love. Come back tomorrow and we'll talk about what went wrong and how do we make it right.
