The Daily Blade: Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson
#200 - Joby Martin // The Serpent Lies, but Scripture Lights the Path
We open the text, not our opinions, and trace how the enemy deceives through legalism, lies, and three old lures that still hook modern men. We name the bait, expose the hook, and offer simple steps to fight with Scripture and wisdom.
• the sword of the Spirit as our primary weapon
• Genesis 3 read closely: what God said vs added rules
• legalism exposed as distrust in God’s word
• the serpent’s lie and the goodness of the Father
• three lures: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life
• 1 John 2 as the lens for worldly desires
• practical self-assessment: identify your primary lure
• actionable guardrails to resist temptation
• call to stay tethered to Scripture and community

Welcome to the Daily Blade. The Word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit, the primary spiritual weapon in the Christians' armor against the forces of evil. Your hosts are Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson, and they stand ready to equip men for the fight. Let's sharpen up.
SPEAKER_01:Welcome back, day two. We're doing a deep dive in Genesis chapter three to really just figure out what went wrong. And we're going to pick it up in chapter three, verse two. It says, And the woman said to the serpent, this is after the serpent said, Did God actually say, You shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it lest you die. Now, fellas, this is classic legalism. You see, God didn't say anything about touching the tree. You see, what a legalist is, is a legalist doesn't believe that God's word is enough. A legalist believes that you have to add something to God's word because he needs your help. This is what the Pharisees did. You see, um, when Jesus would be in obedience with the commands of God, and the Bible says that we should honor the Sabbath and keep it holy. We should remember the Sabbath because God rested. Well, the Pharisees added a bunch of laws to what that meant to make sure that they didn't break the law. You see, sometimes people ask me this question, though, some theological question. They'll say, Well, what do you think about fill in the blank? Salvation, uh, eternal security, um, what do you think about election? Well, it doesn't really matter what I think. What matters is what the Bible says. May we be a people who are tethered to the Word of God, and may we not add things to it. And so he keeps going in verse four. But the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. You see, he says this because he's a liar. For God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be open and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. You see, the devil is a liar, he is a trickster. Ultimately, he does not want us to understand that God is a good dad who loves his kids. And so he's lying to her, verse 6. So, when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate it. Now, here's what I want you to see. From the very beginning, all the way through the New Testament, from Genesis through the New Testament, you're going to see this tactic of the enemy. That the enemy basically only has three lures in his tackle box by which he can snare us. And I use the word lure on purpose because I bass fish a lot. And every lure has a hook. A lure is a trick. When you go bass fishing, you have a lure that simulates something that the bass wants, but what the bass does not understand is that what you want to do is kill him, steal his life, and destroy him and eat him. And so what the woman sees here, what Eve sees, is that it is good for food. This is called lust of the flesh. This is a desire to feel. This could be anything from sex to ice cream to too many bourbons, that you begin to tell yourself, I deserve to feel this way. This is called the lust of the flesh. She also looks at the forbidden fruit and it says that it was a delight to the eyes. This is called lust of the eyes. This is a desire to have. This is about stuff. This is, you think if you get that new truck, it will do something to comfort your soul. You think if you just get that new expensive hunting jacket, it's going to do something to make you a better man. It's not. This is the lust of the eyes. This is about stuff. It also says that she desired it to make herself wise. This is called the pride of life. This is the desire to want to become somebody. This is about status. This is about blue checks. This is about everybody thinking you're really somebody. So all that the enemy has to throw at us is the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life. And you say, Pastor, where do you get that? And I tell you, 1 John chapter 2, verse 15 says this, just straight up. It says, Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, dash, and what comes after the dash is everything the world has to throw at us. And then it lists it here the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires. But whoever does the will of the Father abides forever. Okay, so let me ask you a question. So there's three main lures that the enemy used to try to take us out, fellas. Lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, the pride of life. Ask yourself this question. If you were the devil, how would you take you out? If you were the devil, what lure would you use? As soon as you identify that lure, then you must war against it because we have an enemy, a thief, that wants to steal, kill, and destroy. And if you can see the tactic by which he's trying to take you out, then you can be prepared to turn away from that temptation. Come back tomorrow.
