SPEAKER_01:

All right, folks, welcome back to The Daily Blade. This week we're going to spend the entire week talking about, as men, how do we glorify God at work? That's right. How do we glorify God at work? One of the things that I want to do on the Daily Blade is um I'm not trying to get into your feelings that much. And uh theologically, I'm not even trying to, you know, unpack a half a semester of seminary. The thing I want to do is just be very, very practical. So in the few last few weeks, I've talked about how to glorify God in your marriage and how to glorify God as a dad. And the reality is that we're going to spend a huge portion of our life getting up and going to work. And I want to talk about what does it look like as a man of God to go to work. The first thing I want to talk about today is this is that there is no sacred secular divide. I want to call you to get a vision for God's call in your life. And what I mean by no sacred secular divide when it comes to vocation is this it's not like what I do is uh holy because I teach the Bible for a living, and what you do isn't holy because you have what is called a secular job. No, no, no, no, man. Listen, we are all called by God to go to work with him to rearrange the raw goods that he has provided for human flourishing. Genesis chapter 2, verse 5. It's a very familiar passage. The Bible says, When no bush of the field was yet in the land, and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground. Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the ruah of life, the breath of life. And the man became a living creature. We spent a lot of time on those verses. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed, and out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, and the tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. You see, the reason that God put the man there, the Bible later in verse 15 is going to say the Lord God took the man, put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it. We've talked about this before that one of the things that God gave to man was work to enjoy. That work is not a result of the fall, even though our work is cursed. After sin entered the world, things like thorns and thistles begin to show up. But work is God's idea. And here's what I want you to see: that what God has called men to do is he wants us to join him in what is called the cultural mandate. You see, God speaks everything into existence. And from the very beginning, what God does is he brings order out of chaos. That's what he does. That things are going in all kinds of different directions. And then God brings order to give God glory. And now he has called you and I to assist him as an image bearer to bring order where there has been chaos. So I need you to figure out how you are bringing glory to God in your job. Not just in what you do with the money you make, not just when you get the opportunity to share your faith or share an invitation to go to church with you, but in the actual job that you do. And here's what I mean. You see, some of you think, well, I, you know, I just build houses, I just hang drywall. No, you don't just build houses or just hang drywall. God is using you to bring order. God is using you to create the environment whereby he can grow up a family. Some of you think, well, I work in medicine. I hope you see that you are a literal answer to prayer. That people cry out, dear God, please heal my grandma. And in walks you, doctor, nurse, pharmacist, whatever you are, and you participate with God in the healing of his people. Some of you are like, Well, I work in finance. How is that holy? Here's how that is holy, because everything we have, every dollar we have, is a blood bought, grace gift from God, and you are helping people steward the resources that God has given them well. Maybe you're a teacher, maybe you're a coach, and God is allowing you to pour into one more generation. You see, what I need you to identify is every day, not you're just getting up and going to work so that you can make a paycheck. That's going to be a miserable life. I need you to see the why behind it so that it can drive you to bring glory to God. And God knew what he was doing when he formed you, when he gave you those desires, when he gave you those aptitudes, when he gave you those experiences and called you into your vocation. And I want to encourage you to get in the game, to rearrange the raw goods that God has created for human flourishing. And when we do that at work, we bring God glory. Come back tomorrow and we'll talk about the why we do this.
