The Daily Blade: Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson
#281 - Joby Martin // Why Jesus Plus Nothing Equals Everything
We open Galatians 1:6–9 and press on the urgency of guarding the only gospel. We trace creation, fall, substitution, and why adding works empties grace of its power, then close with a clear call to keep Jesus at the center.
• Paul’s warning about deserting the gospel
• What Paul actually preached and why it matters
• Sin’s weight, justice, and the need for atonement
• Substitution and double imputation explained
• Saved by grace through faith, not by works
• Fruit as the result, not the requirement
• Identifying and rejecting “Jesus plus” teachings
• Christ alone, grace alone, faith alone as the plumb line

Welcome to the Daily Blade. The Word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit, the primary spiritual weapon in the Christian's armor against the forces of evil. Your hosts are Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson, and they stand ready to equip men for the fight. Let's sharpen up.
SPEAKER_01:All right, day three. We're going to cover uh chapter one, verses six through nine in Paul's letter to the churches of Galatia. Paul says this after he introduces himself, he says this in verse six I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are now turning to a different gospel. Not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preach to you, let him be accursed. That means damned to hell. Verse nine. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone is preaching you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. Okay. So what is this gospel that Paul preached? Well, the the gospel that Paul preached is the one and only gospel. That you and I have been created by God, and we were created by God for God. That out of an overflow of God's love for God's self, he created image bearers, you and I. And our very first parents, Adam and Eve, they were in a perfect face-to-face relationship with God. That was God's intent for his own glory and our joy. And then the federal head, Adam and his wife Eve, they sinned, and when they sinned, it broke everything. And you and I have inherited by birth a sin nature. And the Bible says, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. And the problem with sin is not just that it is wrong, but it is destructive. And God is a holy and just God. And because God is just, all sin must be paid for, and sin separates us from God. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. And because God is just, all sin must be paid for. And since we cannot pay for all of our sins, what must we do? Well, everyone will atone for their sins. And you've got one of two options. You can either self-atone and you do that by an eternal separation in a literal physical, actual hell forever and ever and ever, or you can take the substitute, the substitutionary atonement. So Jesus came and lived the life that we couldn't live. He died on the cross, a death that we should have died, and on that cross, for whoever would believe, that when Jesus pushes up on his nail-pierced feet and says it is finished, that it counted for them, then this thing that theologians call the double imputation happens, and your sins are imputed or credited to Jesus, and his righteousness is credited or counted to you. And so whoever believes receives the right to become a child of God. That Jesus is the propitiation for our sin, the payment that satisfies the law of God and the justice of God. And the moment you put your faith in him, then you are saved. Your sins are forgiven, you're adopted into God's family. In Ephesians, Paul says that we are saved by grace through faith and not of our own works, lest none of us boast. And so it's not that God saves good people. It's not that Christianity is a message about bad people becoming better people. No, no, no, no. You and I are spiritually dead, and God does for us what we could not do for ourselves. Now, Ephesians 2 is going to say that we have not been saved by works, but we have been saved for a good work. And so, of course, there is fruit that begins to happen in your life as a result of your salvation, not a prerequisite for it. So anybody that ever teaches Jesus plus works equals salvation, that is a distorted gospel, that is a different gospel. If your pastor teaches that, get your things, get your kids, leave, don't ever come back. And even if an angel were to preach this, then that angel is not an angel of God. In fact, there are very two popular religions these days. Islam, the the way that Muslim people got the Quran, they say is that Gabriel and Angel downloaded this revelation to Muhammad, which is the Quran. I don't disagree that that happened. I just think that was a demon, not an angel. Why? Because it was not the gospel. It was a works-based religion, if you want to call it that. Also, Joseph Smith, uh the starter of the of his own religion, he goes into a cave, he finds some golden plates, and an angel decoded what those things are, and he he he writes another book. He writes the Book of Mormon, okay? That is that may that be accursed. The gospel is this is that G in when it in regards to salvation, Jesus plus nothing equals everything. That's it. And so it's not Jesus plus baptism, it's not Jesus plus good works, it's not Jesus plus first communion. No, no, no, no. These things are a different gospel. By the way, it was Martin Luther's reading of the book of Galatians that made him realize the church that he was a part of was teaching a different gospel. It is not the gospel of Jesus plus indulgences or plus confession or plus first communion. No, no, no, no. That our salvation is in Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, period. End that is the gospel. There is no other gospel.
