We open Galatians 5:1 and press the question of whether we’re actually living free in Christ or still trapped in a yoke of slavery. We talk about surrender, standing firm, and fighting the pull of sin, self-righteousness, and a culture that sells self-rule as freedom.

• reading Galatians 5:1 and defining gospel freedom
• Jesus setting us free from sin not just forgiving sin
• why self-determination is not the same as freedom
• “stand firm” as a fighting posture in the Christian life
• rejecting works-based righteousness and performance faith
• resisting the bait of the world, the flesh, and Satan
• freedom from the penalty, power, and presence of sin

All right, welcome back to the Daily Blade. This week we are going to be in part of Galatians 5. We will not make it all the way through, but we're just marching verse by verse through the book of Galatians. We're only going to do one verse today, Galatians chapter 5, beginning in verse 1. God's word says, For freedom, Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. For freedom, Christ has set us free. That freedom is a result of the gospel, not control. Now I know this sounds counterintuitive, but Jesus Himself says, if you want to find your life, if you try to spend your whole life finding your life, you're going to lose it. But if you lose your life to him, in losing your life to him, that's where you're going to find it. You see, in essence, if if you're a believer in Christ, then Christ died on the cross not only to forgive you of your sins, but to set you free. And so if you are not experiencing an immense amount of freedom in your Christian walk, then you're not doing it right. Now, I don't want to overstate it because it is a struggle. There is a battle. The Spirit of God is sanctifying us, and we still have the desires of the flesh, but the ultimate result of Christ is freedom. Dr. John Piper said this one time: some version of, in heaven, you're going to wake up every day, not that you sleep in heaven, but in heaven, you wake up every day, do whatever you want, and feel absolutely no regret. Why? Because you have been so conformed into the image and likeness of Christ that you will walk in the freedom that He has purchased for you. Now the reality is, is that it is for freedom that Christ has set us free, but only Christ can set you free. Self-determination is not freedom. We live in a world where we are taught that freedom means I get to do whatever I want. Well, a fully surrendered life to Christ, I guess that's true, because what you want is to please Him. And so what Paul says is you've got to stand firm, therefore. Stand firm. Hopefully, you know, if you listen to any of my teaching, that is a fighting term. It means to take a stand against, to stand up, to stand your ground. And you have to fight against this yoke of slavery. So let me ask you, are you a slave? Now, particularly what he's talking about is do not go back to a works-based righteousness. Don't think that you have to follow through with certain Jewish religious traditions in order to be made right with Christ. Don't think that it is your good works, particularly in this case in Galatia, circumcision, that connects you to God. That is not it at all. You've got to actually fight against that. That's not freedom, that is slavery. And so in our day, I would say any religious tradition that does not help you know Christ better is a yoke of slavery. It is not a result of freedom. You've got to fight against sin itself in your flesh. You've got to fight against Satan himself. You got to fight against this dark, dark world. You got to fight not just against flesh and blood, but you've got to fight against the principalities of evil that are trying to drag you back into a world of slavery. You've got to fight against this world that spends billions of dollars a day to bait you down a road of self-determination that promises self-satisfaction and it is nothing but a lie. You see, the enemy wants to bait you back down the road to sin and self and self-righteousness. He wants to bait you down the road where you're constantly asking yourself, am I good enough? Well, I've screwed up again. Maybe I've screwed up so much that I bet he doesn't want to have anything to do with me. The problem with that is that if that's what you believe, then you may actually think, well, I bet he's really proud of me now because I've gotten it right and I'm doing so good. Either one of these is rooted in you, and you have to fight that. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Have you come to that place where you have fully surrendered, submitted your life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ? And a part of the evidence of doing so is that you will walk in freedom. And that is not freedom to sin, that is freedom from sin. That is freedom from the penalty of sin, that you have been justified, that your sins have been paid for. That is a continuous experience of freedom over sin, freedom over the power of sin in your life. And one day, when we are glorified in heaven, we will be free from even the very presence of sin.
