The Daily Blade: Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson
#361 - Joby Martin // Delight In The Word
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Psalm 1 doesn’t just call us to avoid bad influences, it calls us to build a life that’s actually rooted. We dig into the sharp contrast between the man who is blessed and the life that turns into chaff, and we slow down on the word that changes everything: “but.” It’s not enough to stop walking in the counsel of the wicked if we never replace that space with something stronger. The turning point is delight in the law of the Lord and meditation day and night.
We get practical and personal about Bible reading and Christian spiritual growth. Do we treat Scripture like a burden, a box to check, or a gift that revives the soul and helps us know Jesus? We talk about why the Daily Blade is meant to be an appetizer, a supplement that grows your hunger for the main course, not a substitute for time in God’s Word. Real spiritual maturity looks like partnering with the Holy Spirit and learning to feed on Scripture directly, moving from being spoon fed to digging into the meat and potatoes of the Bible.
Then we confront the attention battle head-on. A quote from John Piper lands like a gut punch: social media can prove we’re not actually too busy for prayer and the Word. We ask what’s really eating your minutes, doomscrolling, comparing, endless videos, and how to re-order your day without pretending you have more time than you do. You’ll leave with a simple plan: reread Psalm 1 all week, choose a verse, write it down, revisit it during small moments, and if you don’t feel delight, bring that honestly to God and ask for help. Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a five-star rating and review to help equip more men for the fight.

SPEAKER_01All right, welcome back to day three in Psalm 1. I'm going to read it every day. Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of the sinner, nor sits in the seat of the scoffer, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous, for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. Now, verse two says, But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. Notice at the beginning of verse two it says, but. So it is not enough to just cut out the way of the wicked, the way of the sinner, the counsel of the unrighteous, to not sit in the seat of the scoffer. It's not enough just to pull weeds. What you also have to do is you have to add something to your life. And what the psalmist says is that the man who is blessed is the man who delights in the law of the Lord. That means that we delight in the scriptures. Let me ask you, do you delight in the scriptures? The Bible says the law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. Brothers, I'm just going to tell you, I don't know the blessed man of God that walks in a deep and intimate and personal relationship with Jesus that does not have a deep delight for the Word of God, that does not have a deep and abiding relationship yearning with the Word of God. So do you see your time in the Word as a gift from God or like a burden? Do you see your time in the Word as a have to or a get to? Do you skim by it occasionally? Do you hear it preach when it's convenient? Do you ignore it mostly or do you delight in it and meditate on it day and night? Because if you're just skimming it occasionally, and if you're just hearing it preached conveniently, or if you just ignore it mostly, you're in trouble. But the opposite is true too. Blessed are you if you meditate on it day and night. Let me ask you, what would it look like for you to treasure the word as a means to an end of knowing Christ more? And if all you're getting is the daily blade, bro, you are not getting enough. Kyle and I have done the daily blade as an appetizer. And what an appetizer is supposed to be, it is supposed to help grow your appetite for the main course. You see, spiritual maturity is when you learn to allow the Holy Spirit to feed you directly. Jesus says that he's going away, and this is good because he is sending us the helper to remind us of everything that he has taught. And the thing that the Daily Blade is, is this is just a supplement of you delighting in the word and meditating upon it day and night. You see, spiritual immaturity is acting like a little baby bird where the mama has to go out and fetch the food and chew up the food and grind it up and just like spit it right into your mouth. And at some point, if you're a brand new Christian, great, welcome. But at some point, you gotta grow up. You gotta be a man of God. And if you want to be a blessed man of God, you, partnered with the Holy Spirit, have to learn to dig into the meat and the potatoes of the word itself. John Piper recently at a conference, he said this. He said, one of social media's gifts to us is that it will prove that prayerlessness and a lack of time in the word were not because we are too busy. So let me ask you Do you spend most of your time scrolling, comparing yourself to everybody else, doom scrolling, or watching some kind of dumb YouTube stuff that has nothing to do with feeding your soul in relationship to Jesus? Now, it's totally great to keep an eye on the news and to be informed on all the things, but not at the expense of every single day delighting in the Word of God and meditating on it day and night. And if you're like, okay, what do I do? How do I start? Okay, that's fine. Use the Daily Blade. Like we're gonna spend all week in Psalm chapter one. So how about this week before you listen to what I think about it? Why don't you just dig in all five days and just read it over and over and over? And maybe each day you would just take one of the verses and you just meditate it upon it day and night. Write it on a card or put it on your phone, set it somewhere where you can drive. And every single time you've got a free moment, like instead of reaching for your phone at the red light, then you would just look at Psalm 1, 2. His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. And if you don't delight in the word of God, tell God about it. Say, God, I need help here. I need help. I want to love this word like Jesus loved the word. I want to love this word like David loved the word. God, I want to love this word like you love me because in it is life. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.
