The Daily Blade: Joby Martin & Kyle Thompson
#371 - Joby Martin // Trust Jesus With The Outcome
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your next big decision might not need more research, more opinions, or another round of “what if” scenarios. It might need one clear filter from John 2:5: “Do whatever he tells you to do.” We take that single verse and apply it to real leadership pressure where the stakes are high and the outcome is not guaranteed.
We walk through the wedding at Cana and pay attention to the part we usually skip: the servants’ steps. Fill the jars. Draw the water. Carry it to the master. None of it makes sense on paper, and that’s the point. Obedience often looks unimpressive, inconvenient, or even risky before God moves. The miracle shows up along the path, not at the starting line. If you’re wrestling with Christian decision making, spiritual leadership, or how to trust God when you can’t control results, this conversation gives you a simple way to move forward.
Then we get practical about hearing Jesus. We talk about why Scripture comes first, what it means to abide in God’s word, and how Jesus describes his voice in John 10. We also share why wise leaders run major decisions by other godly people, and we challenge the question that quietly drives fear: “Will it work?” The better question is faithfulness, and we end with Jonathan’s bold “it may be” moment from 1 Samuel 14 that redefines courage for everyday leaders.

Welcome And The Daily Blade Mission
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the Daily Blade. The Word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit, the primary spiritual weapon in the Christian's armor against the forces of evil. Your hosts are Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson, and they stand ready to equip men for the fight. Let's sharpen up.
Leadership Lesson Day Three
SPEAKER_01All right, welcome back. Day three, leadership lessons. Not my normal gig, but I want to be helpful to you because not only am I a teacher of the word, but as the lead pastor of 1122, I have a leadership role, the responsibility to lead this movement. And these are just some lessons that I've learned in doing so. And so here's the third leadership lesson I want to share with you. That when
John 2:5 As A Decision Filter
SPEAKER_01it comes to making decisions, when it comes with making directional decisions in your life, then it all boils down to one verse, John 2.5. Do whatever he tells you to do. So the leadership lesson is this: do whatever Jesus tells you to do and trust him with the consequences. You see, the context around John 2.5 is this. I've talked about it before. Jesus and his disciples are at the wedding at Cana. They run out of wine. His mom comes to him and says, Son, they're out of wine. He says, Woman, what does this have to do with me? My time has not yet come. And then Mary, who knows who Jesus is, who knows that he is the promised one, who knows that he was birthed of a virgin, her, he knows, she knows this. She knows who this is. And she gathers the servants around him, and then she simply says this to the servants do whatever he tells you to do. And then what they do next is a series of things that do not make sense on paper. They take the stolen water jars where people have been washing their hands, which means that it would have been really nasty. They fill it up with water because Jesus told them to. They go get a ladle, they dip some out because Jesus told them to. They take that dirty hand washing water and they take it to the Master of Ceremonies because Jesus has told them to. And then somewhere in those steps of obedience, a miracle happens and the water is turned to wine. So
Hearing Jesus Through Word And Prayer
SPEAKER_01then you may ask the question well, how do I know what he's telling me to do? Well, first read the Bible. Go back to the first day of this week. He has told you to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, love your neighbor as yourself. That's called the Great Commandment. He has told you that go and make disciples of all nations, teaching them everything that Christ has taught us and to baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. So that's one way is read your Bible. Secondly, in John chapter 15, Jesus says, Abide in me and I will abide in you. And they ask, how? How are we going to do that, boss? And he says, Abide in my word and I will abide in you. In John chapter 10, Jesus says, My sheep hear my voice. And so, are you hearing the voice of Jesus? Because I promise you, if Jesus says, My sheep hear my voice, do you think it's because you're not listening or because he's not talking? He goes on to say, the voice of a stranger, they will not listen to. So ask yourself, as you were leading your team, your family, your organization, have you been more discipled by the world or by the word?
Big Steps Need Godly Counsel
SPEAKER_01You see, because in a serious time of prayer years ago, God told me to plant this church called 1122. It is the answer to the question I asked yesterday. What would you do for the glory of God if you knew it wouldn't fail? Well, I would plant a church that would be a movement for all people to discover and deepen a relationship with Jesus. And you say, Well, that's easy for you to say, Pastor Joe, because it's going real good. Well, it didn't feel real easy back in 2012 when we pushed all of our chips in to the middle of the table simply because I thought that's what God was telling me to do. Now, after you think you know, you've heard from Christ and what he's told you to do, one of the really smart things to do, wise things to do, is to run that by some other godly people. So when I thought God told me to plant a church, my wife was on board, my pastor, Pastor Jerry Sweat, blessed it, and my elders confirmed it. And then I just stepped out into obedience to what Christ has called me to, and I just trust him with the consequences.
Faithfulness Beats The Results Question
SPEAKER_01Now, one of the things you're gonna want to ask is, will it work? That's the wrong question. It might work the way you thought it was gonna work, or it might not work the way you thought it was gonna work. That's the wrong question. Will it work? Is the wrong question. The right question is, Am I being faithful? Do I trust God that he's still got the whole world in his hands? And the reality is there's only one way to find out, brother. You just gotta step out in obedience and be faithful to what he's called you to do.
Jonathan’s Courage When Success Isn’t Certain
SPEAKER_01There's this really cool episode in 1 Samuel chapter 14. David is in charge, and he's got Jonathan, his armor bearer, and and they are fighting against the Philistines. This happens over and over and over, and it's just David and Jonathan against an entire garrison of the Philistine army, and they're at a place called Mi'kmash. And there's a lot of like fighting details here because the Philistines have the upper hand because they have the higher ground. And there's this one verse where Jonathan, the armor-bearer of David, says this. He says, This is 1 Samuel 14, 16. He says, Come, let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised. And I love this. It may be that the Lord will work for us, for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few. And so you can see here that Jonathan is not led by fear. He feels compelled of God to go pick a fight with an entire garrison, even though it's only two of them, just Jonathan and David. And he knows that he is not guaranteed success, but it may be that the Lord will work for us. And if you if you know about 1 Samuel 14, you'll know that what begins to happen here is that God strikes the Philistines with fear, that David and Jonathan overcome the Philistines, and then this leads all of Israel to be emboldened with courage, and it leads to a huge Israelite victory. So the leadership lesson is this do whatever he tells you to do and trust him with the consequences.
