0:20 All right, welcome to day four in this interaction between Jesus and the woman at the well. 0:26 So at this point Jesus meets with this woman, breaking through religious boundaries and societal boundaries, and then he digs into where she really is. 0:37 That her whole life is pictured at this well. 0:41 That the reason she's coming at noon is because she's made a train wreck of her life. 0:44 She's on her sixth man. 0:45 She's had five husbands. 0:47 The guy she's living with now is not her husband, so she's ashamed. 0:50 She comes in the middle of the day. 0:52 Jesus does not wait for her to get her act together, but he pursues her and a little simple prayer ain't going to be enough. 0:58 He digs into the deepest, darkest places of her life and she has freedom, she has healing, she has the peace of Christ sitting next to her, making the greatest offer of all time Put your faith in me and you will be fully and finally satisfied with a wellspring of life on the inside of you that leads to eternal life. 1:22 And then what she is going to do and this happens all the time is that she is going to dodge the invitation with some kind of theological jujitsu here. 1:33 Here's how this goes. 1:34 This is a total deflection. 1:36 Verse 20, the woman is speaking. 1:38 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship. 1:50 And Jesus said to her woman believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 1:54 You worship what you do not know. 1:54 We worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 1:59 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. 2:07 This is not an either or that we are supposed to worship God truly. 2:11 This is why doctrine matters. 2:13 You can't rightly love God without right thoughts about God. 2:16 But we're also supposed to worship him in spirit, with all of our heart and all of our soul and all of our mind and all of our body. 2:23 Four the father is seeking such people to worship him, thank God. 2:28 God is not looking for a particular style of worship. 2:32 He is looking for the saints to worship him. 2:34 Verse 24, god is spirit and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and truth. 2:39 And the woman said to him I know that Messiah is coming, he who is called Christ, and when he comes he will teach us all things. 2:44 And Jesus said to him. 2:45 I know that Messiah is coming, he who is called Christ, and when he comes he will teach us all things. 2:48 And Jesus said to her I who speak to you, am he Now? 2:53 Anybody that ever claims that Jesus never claims to be God in the Bible has never read the Bible. 2:57 So Jesus, right here in chapter four, verse 26 of the gospel of John, claims divinity. 3:03 Right here he says I who speak to you am the Messiah, I am the Christ, I am the fulfillment of the Old Testament. 3:09 All right, but here's what I want to talk about. 3:11 Jesus is talking to her about the most important thing in all of eternity her sin and her salvation. 3:17 But what she wants to do? 3:18 The moment she finds her place herself in an uncomfortable place, she wants to deflect and she goes. 3:24 Oh, I got theological questions. 3:26 Our forefathers say we worship on this mountain, but your forefathers say it's about that mountain. 3:30 And then, when Jesus gets to the heart of worship, she goes. 3:34 Well, one day, you know, we don't know now, but one day somebody will tell us. 3:37 Okay, oftentimes what begins to happen when people are confronted with the spirit of God and they begin to realize their way isn't working. 3:46 And the spirit of God does that deep dive into their heart like Jesus just did, then they know, people know this woman knows if I actually follow this God that I'm talking to here at the well then something's got to change. 4:00 At least my sex life has to change. 4:02 My marriage situation is going to change, and so people will often dodge with theology when they don't want to deal with personally surrendering. 4:11 One time I was on an airplane actually a million times I was on an airplane. 4:14 But at this particular time this younger girl comes and sits next to me. 4:18 I had a layover in Amsterdam. 4:20 I always travel with some people, but this girl sitting next to me, from Amsterdam. 4:24 She sits down, I have a Bible out. 4:26 She looks at me and says do you actually believe that? 4:28 And so I go. 4:29 Of course I do. 4:30 And I began to share the gospel with her. 4:32 And this girl had never seen a Bible. 4:34 She was doing some shady stuff in Amsterdam and she began I'm telling you, the spirit of God began to woo this girl. 4:40 I began to tell her about how much God loves her, no matter what she's done. 4:43 And those things weren't working. 4:45 And she knew deep down in her soul she was more than just a physical body, but she was a spiritual being and something was wrong and you could tell she was being drawn and drawn and drawn. 4:55 The tears began to well up and then she pulled the woman at the well move. 5:00 She just begins to ask me theological questions and they're nothing but distractions. 5:05 She throws it up hey well, why does God hate gay people? 5:09 And what about the dinosaurs? 5:11 I mean, how do you explain the dinosaurs if God created everything? 5:15 And what about a man on an island that's never heard about Jesus before? 5:18 Okay, these are legitimate questions. 5:21 God doesn't hate gay people. 5:23 There's an answer about dinosaurs and there's also an answer see Romans 9 and 10, about the guy on the island. 5:28 But in that moment I looked at the girl and says are you gay? 5:32 She says no, okay. 5:34 Are you a paleontologist? 5:35 She says I am not. 5:36 Are you a sociologist? 5:37 No, I am not. 5:39 Then why don't we deal with you and God in this moment? 5:44 This is what Jesus is doing with this woman. 5:47 Jesus says the Messiah, the Christ, the answer to everything that you were looking for is sitting right in front of you. 5:55 Don't ever let somebody dodge a gospel conversation with some sort of theological distraction. 6:02 You just get to the heart of it. 6:03 Who is Jesus to you? 6:06 Amen.
