0:20 All right, day four. 0:22 Philippians 2 17 and following, even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 0:30 Likewise, you also should be glad and rejoice with me. 0:33 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you, for I have no one like him who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare. 0:45 For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 0:49 Let's drill down on verse 20. 0:51 Paul says about young Timothy, for I have no one like him who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare. 0:59 Why will Timothy be concerned for the welfare of the Philippians? 1:03 Here is why. 1:04 Because Paul was concerned with the welfare of Timothy. 1:08 Paul says, I got no one like him. 1:11 Here's what I want to point out. 1:13 Discipleship is rooted in relationship. 1:16 Discipleship is not merely a transfer of knowledge about Christ, but it is deeply rooted in relationship. 1:26 And what you will see, especially if you read Acts starting in 16 and following, and then you read 1st and 2 Timothy, what you're going to see is Paul deeply caring for Timothy. 1:38 And because Paul cared for Timothy, now Paul is saying to the church at Philippi, Timothy will care for you. 1:46 In fact, Paul calls Timothy his own son. 1:49 Well, how in the world do you get here? 1:51 It's by spending a lot of time together. 1:53 It's by being vulnerable together. 1:56 There is a a man that I I disciple a bunch of people. 2:01 Sometimes it's online because of hectic travel schedules and all that kind of stuff. 2:05 Some people they live in other places, but some of the people I disciple, there's a there's a man, he you're very familiar with him, and on Dauntly Life, it's Mike Dragas, the alligator wrestler, the MMA fighter, and he asked me to disciple him. 2:20 And honestly, man, the way my schedule is is kind of tough. 2:23 However, I knew this was of the Lord, and so I just take him on everywhere I go traveling, he goes with me. 2:30 Why? 2:30 So we can spend time together, so that we can know each other, so I can see the way he lives his life a little bit, and so he can see me on the road doing ministry. 2:39 And a big part of what this is is that Paul would love Timothy enough to speak truth into him. 2:45 And sometimes that truth felt like a rebuke. 2:48 It was not things that Timothy necessarily wanted to hear, but Paul knew that in order for Timothy to be the man that God had called him to be, these were things that he needed to hear. 2:58 In fact, if you read through 1st and 2 Timothy, what you're going to see is Paul quote unquote encouraging Timothy. 3:06 Literally, what encourage means is to put courage inside. 3:10 Why? 3:11 Because Timothy was a scared little boy, man. 3:14 In fact, in 1 Timothy, there's about 16 or 17 reasons to be afraid. 3:22 And yet Paul's going to over and over and over say, look here, Tim, I know you're young, I know you got some stomach issues, I know you get nervous, I know you don't feel qualified, but when you're afraid, Tim, you got to know this. 3:34 God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 3:38 But all of this was rooted in relationship. 3:41 In fact, some of the final words that we have of the Apostle Paul are in 2 Timothy chapter 4. 3:47 I want you to hear the relationship here. 3:50 I want you to hear the charge. 3:52 I want you to hear the encouragement rooted in how much Paul lost Timothy. 3:58 Of all the things he could tell him, here's his final words. 4:01 Paul says to Timothy, I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing in his kingdom, and here's his charge, preach the word. 4:12 Be ready in season and out of season. 4:15 Reprove, rebuke, exhort with complete patience and teaching. 4:19 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into mists. 4:32 But as for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 4:40 And then Paul concludes, For I am already being poured out as a drink offering. 4:45 We talked about this that this week. 4:56 Do you see the tenderness rooted in this relationship? 4:59 What Paul is saying to Timothy is look here, buddy, I've been with you a long time, and as I have poured my life out, a part of what I have poured it into is you. 5:08 I am passing the baton to you. 5:11 What Paul is saying, the fog father figure in Timothy's life is look, dude, I believe in you. 5:17 He commissions him and he calls Timothy to do even greater things. 5:21 This is what Coach Bull Lee did for me. 5:24 He made me preach. 5:25 He didn't ask me about it. 5:26 He just I was voluntole, you're preaching. 5:29 And then when I got finished, he put his finger in my chest and he said, Boy, when you preach the Bible, I see two things happen. 5:35 I see you come alive, I see them come them come alive. 5:39 And then he began to just bring me along with him to show me in relationship what it looked like to follow Jesus. 5:46 So let me ask you, who are you doing that for? 5:50 And if you don't have any prospects, you start praying right now. 5:53 God, would you put somebody in my life to disciple? 5:56 And if you're 20 years old, it ought to be a high schooler or a middle schooler. 6:00 If you're 40 years old, it ought to be a 20-something year old. 6:02 You see how the math works. 6:04 May we be about our father's business.
